In the span of a year, Erik Morales jumped out of retirement and achieved glory. To get his glory, he challenged the views of many experts and asked for the toughest opponents. And for many, at this moment Morales should be celebrating the achievement of his fourth title - the WBA interim super lightweight belt - which the judges on April 9 gave to Argentine boxer Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.
Morales is planning to return on July 30. The biggest priority for him is rematch with Maidana. He would also consider moving down to pursue a world title in the lightweight division. He says everything else, including a fourth meeting with Marco Antonio Barrera, is speculation at this point.
"On Wednesday I was in Los Angeles (with Golden Boy Promotions) and discussed what we're going to do for my next fight. My first choice is a rematch with Maidana, and my second choice would be, to see if I can go down to 135 pounds and try to fight with one of the champions at that weight. Beyond that there is nothing. My next fight will be on July 30 in Las Vegas or Mexico City, perhaps on HBO pay per view. This is everything right now, everything else is just speculation," Morales said.
