Kevin Cunningham, trainer of super welterweight contender Erickson Lubin (19-1), has advised BoxingScene.com that a fight against former champion Ishe Smith (29-10) is in the works for his fighter on February 9th.
The fight would take place at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. on the Gervonta Davis-Abner Mares undercard and will be televised by Showtime.
Lubin suffered his first professional defeat in 2017 when he was caught cold by then WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo in the first round. He bounced back from that loss in April when he stopped Silverio Ortiz in 4 rounds.
Smith, who held the IBF super welterweight title in 2013, has been a tough gatekeeper in recent years, giving prospects and contenders highly competitive fights. He lost a split decision to recently crowned world champion Tony Harrison in May and lost a fight closer than the scorecards indicated to Julian Williams in 2017.
The winner of this fight will be in prime position to face fellow Premier Boxing Champions fighter’s such as Harrison, WBA/IBF/IBO champion Jarrett Hurd and former champions Erislandy Lara and Jermell Charlo.
