Promoter Yvon Michel is expected to announce early next week that Eleider Alvarez will trade punches with Chad Dawson, on July 16 in Quebec City, according to Radio Canada.
This duel between the Alvarez and the former WBC champion heavyweight would be one of two proposed fights that are jointly being staged by GYM and Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Championship (PBC).
Dawson was knocked out by Adonis Stevenson (29-1, 22 KOs) in a single round three years ago, when 'Superman' moved up to 175-pounds and picked up the WBC world championship. It was the second consecutive knockout loss for Dawson and significantly crippled his respected standing with the fans and critics.
Stevenson will headline the card at the Videotron Centre when he defends his WBC crown against Thomas Williams (20-1, 14 KOs).
Alvarez (19-0, 10 KOs), who last November secured the mandatory contender position to Stevenson (with a victory against Isaac Chilemba) is waiting for the title clash to become a reality.
Alvarez was originally scheduled to fight last Saturday at the Bell Centre in the tuneup fight on the undercard of Beterbiev Artur and Ezequiel Maderna. But the latest proposal to face Dawson was too good to be ignored.
Dawson (34-4, 19 KOs), 32 years old, has just won his last two fights and he will have the opportunity to get a chance to position himself for a rematch with Stevenson - if he overcomes Alvarez.
The upcoming doubleheader will be staged as a mini-tournament. All four fighters are under contract with Haymon.
The winners of the two fights will face off for the WBC light heavyweight belt in the fall.
