A few weeks ago BoxingScene.com first reported that IBF lightweight champion Robert "E-Bunny" Easter (21-0) added world class trainer Kevin Cunningham to his team.
Next up for Easter is a unification bout against WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (38-0). The Ohio native is currently training at Camp Cunningham in West Palm Beach, Florida where Cunningham said they are, "working on the master plan to beat Garcia."
The fight was formally announced this past weekend takes place on July 28th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Showtime will televise.
Easter is undefeated but struggled to a split decision victory against Javier Fortuna in his most recent bout in January and had a rough time against Denis Shafikov in his prior fight while Garcia has fought his previous two bouts at 140 pounds and won unanimous decisions over Adrien Broner and Sergey Lipinets. He won his lightweight title 18 months ago when he stopped Dejan Zlaticanin in three rounds in Las Vegas.
So far Cunningham has liked what he has seen from the 5'11" Easter who towers over most of his opponents.
"I am really impressed with how Bunny is coming along," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
Easter feels confident that Cunningham will take him to the next level.
"This is a fight I've been waiting for and I'm really excited that the time is now," said Easter.
"This is the best fighting the best. These are the fights that boxing is all about. I made the move to train with Kevin Cunningham down in Florida and I think it's going to help me reach another level. It's just eat, sleep and train down there. We're going to be ready on July 28 to put on a show and deliver fireworks."
