Donnie Nietes Defeats Nantapech For IBF Flyweight Crown

Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino in Cebu City, Philippines - Donnie “Ahas” Nietes (40-1-4, 22 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Komgrich “Eaktawan” Nantapech (22-4, 15 KOs) to capture the vacant IBF world flyweight championship.

Nietes is now a three division world champion. The scores were 117-111, 117-111, 115-113.

The Filipino boxer is looking for major fights, but most of the big names in the lower weight divisions are now at super flyweight, like Roman Gonzale, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Carlos Cuadras and  Juan Francisco Estrada.

Nietes captured his first world title in 2007, when he won the WBO minimumweight title. He made four defense of the belt before moving up to junior flyweight.

He capture the WBO's junior flyweight title after winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Raul Garcia in 2011. He then defended the title nine time, including a memorable two fight series with Moises Fuentes of Mexico and win over his countryman Francisco Rodriguez Jr.

Last September, Nietes made a decision to drop his title and move up to the flyweight division. He traveled over to the StubHub Center in Carson, California to win a twelve round decision over former world champion Edge Sosa. Nietes had a stroke of bad luck, because by the time he moved up in weight, all of his planned targets moved one division north.
