Don King: I'd Make Mayweather vs. Imam Right Now

by Rick Reeno

Hall of Fame promoter Don King is still pecking away. No longer a major player in the promotional marketplace, the 84-year-old veteran believes his company currently promotes the next crossover superstar - undefeated junior welterweight contender Amir Imam (18-0, 15KOs).

Imam, 25-years-old, has been featured several times on Showtime. He stays very busy and often creates fireworks in the ring.

On November 28th in Quebec City, Imam will return to action for the fourth time in 2015. He faces Adrian Granados (16-4) as part of the James DeGale-Lucian Bute undercard.

King is willing to match Imam against anybody - including the recently retired pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"[I believe the next superstar is] Amir Imam. That's the guy you'll be watching, I'm telling you. I would like to see him fight Floyd right now, so then Floyd can pass the torch. Any way it goes - even if he loses he's still a winner, because the people are going to see a real guy put his stuff out there and really go. There is no loser with that fight. If this boy comes through you got another star," King explained to BoxingScene.com.

Imam is already in line for a world title shot. The World Boxing Council recently ordered newly crowned WBC champion Viktor Postol (28-0, 12KOs) to face Imam in a mandatory defense.

Because King wanted to have Imam stay busy next Saturday, the WBC has allowed Postol to make one voluntary defense before satisfying his mandatory obligation.

"I can go right into Postol right now, but I said let [Imam] have another fight. Let him risk that title shot because I know we got that guarantee, as long as he doesn't lose. We are fighting in Quebec on the 28th. Anybody who is sane wouldn't do that, but I'm insane and therefore I will do it," King said.

"[Postol] wouldn't have had any voluntary fight if I didn't make the fight for this guy on the 28th. Postol had fought [in October] and I wanted [Imam] to get a fight. If he don't win this next fight, he ain't never going to be the champion anyway."

Well yeah King want part of the $3 million dollars Iman will get for this fight

King still thinks like an old-fashioned promoter... get in as many tune-ups as possible before a risky fight.. King tried to this with Stiverne at Heavy... Imam has fought nobody. King would rather have his fighter pick up payday before…

Does that make sense to anybody? If he's so confident in his fighter then why didn't he just make the fight vs postol? I mean Imam is fighting some no hoper next right? Might as well.

That would be a very interesting fight,, I think Iman is gonna have a bright future and world titles at 140-147 before his career is over.. This fight would never happen but it's an interesting one to think about..

[QUOTE=SeekDaGreat;16232762]Damn, 84? He's in pretty good physical shape.[/QUOTE] If you have a reason to live you will. Don't ever retire , find something you enjoy and stick with it.
