Domonique Dolton-Roberto Garcia Tabbed For WBA Title

By Jake Donovan

The WBA has authorized the respective camps for contenders Domonique Dolton and Roberto Garcia to begin negotiations for an interim 154 lb. title fight, Boxingscene.com has recently learned.

Should the two sides fail to reach terms, a purse bid will eventually be ordered. The winner of the suggested showdown will become mandatory challenger to unbeaten titlist Austin Trout.

“We’re very excited about this opportunity,” stated Henry Rivalta of Acquinity Sports, who promotes Dolton. “3D (Dolton’s nickname) is a beast, who possesses the skills to become a champion in this sport for a long time.”

Dolton (13-0, 7KO) was born and raised in Detroit, and trained out of the famed Kronk Gym before relocating to South Florida late last year. The change of address came with his signing with Acquinity, reaping the immediate benefits with fights in October and November.

The latter bout garnered airtime, as it was shown on a joint venture between Pursuit TV and Bounce TV. Dolton scored a shutout win over Richard Gutierrez. The regional title at stake helped the unbeaten contender advance in the rankings.

Garcia (31-3, 21KO) hasn’t fought in nearly a year, his last ring appearance an upset win over Antwone Smith last March. The transplanted Mexican is best known for his role as the comeback opponent for Antonio Margarito in May ’10, where he lost a lopsided decision.

He has since won three straight, including the aforementioned win over Smith.

Dolton fought just twice in 2012, though both coming at the back end of the year, following a promotional crisis that led to a 16-month ring absence. The 22-year old is recognized as one of the top young prospects in the sport, though ready to make the transition to contender.

“He is what boxing fans want to see,” insists Rivalta. “He’s a versatile kid who can do it all. He is also very humble and we are glad to represent him. There is no doubt that at 154 he will soon be at the top of the division.”

I was at the wild card when Eric Brown got the news that even if garcia wins that fight team canelo would not be "intrested" in a Garcia-Canelo fight. I'm guessing that canelos ppl would not want Garcia power chin…

Glad to see Roberto Garcia get a much deserved and overdue title shot. I haven't seen Dolton fight yet but I'm looking forward to this one. Calling Garcia's win over Smith an upset was a bit of a stretch. Garcia…
