Deontay Wilder vs. Andrzej Wawrzyk on Tap For February 25

By Carlos Boogs

Sources in Poland have advised BoxingScene.com that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (37-0, 36 KOs) will make the fifth defense of his title on February 25 at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Wilder will defend his title against WBC #12 ranked Andrzej Wawrzyk (33-1, 19 KOs) of Poland.

Wilder's last defense came in July, when he suffered numerous injuries in his knock out victory over Chris Arreola. Wilder required surgery for a bicep and hand injury, which kept him out of the ring for the remainder of the year.

Wawrzyk has won his last six bouts - all by knockout - since getting drilled by Alexander Povetkin in three rounds back in May of 2013. Wawrzyk fought on the undercard of Wilder's stoppage win over Johann Duhaupas last September, also at the Legacy Arena. He stopped Mike Sheppard in three rounds.

Wilder was scheduled to face Povetkin in May of this year, but the fight was canceled when the Russian boxer failed a drug test. Povetkin also failed a drug test last weekend for a planned WBC eliminator with Bermane Stiverne, and that fight was canceled as well. Wilder beat Stiverne for the WBC title in January 2015.

After Povetkin tested positive and Wilder was out for the remainder of the year with injury, the WBC granted his request to make a voluntary defense of the belt.

As far as the co-featured attraction, there are discussions of another heavyweight brawl between Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15KOs) and Dominic Breazeale (17-1, 15KOs).

Szpilka has been out of the ring since a crushing knockout loss against Wilder back in January at the Barclays Center in New York. Breazeale has been out of the ring since suffering his first career defeat, a seventh round knockout at the hands of IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in June.

On paper this is a complete mismatch, but Wilder's so reckless I wouldn't be surprised to see him pick up another injury en route to the inevitable KO. The man just cannot fight in a disciplined manner. It's all wild,…

Bad fight, probably wanted to test the hand against an easy opponent, I think I won't even watch that fight.
