MUM’s the word for Denton Vassell, who aims to be laughing all the way to the bank after his next fight.

Commonwealth welterweight champion Denton Vassell, who works at a Manchester branch of the HSBC bank, gets daily yoga lessons from his mother, Janet De Silva.

Dubbed ‘Mini Mike Tyson’ by his promoter Ricky Hatton, yoga forms part of his pre-fight ritual.

It will be a big part of the build-up to his six-rounder against Ronny McField of Nicaragua at Oldham Sports Centre next Saturday.

Vassell, 26, said: “My mum is a yoga teacher and it’s great way on fight days to wind down.

“I can do stretches that most people can’t do because of the yoga mum does with me. I have had 17 fights and won them all.

“And I put a lot of my success down to yoga. I work in a bank and when I need to relax I turn to yoga, which makes me a better person.

“People think I am all power, speed and fitness but the yoga has made me elusive.

“I do stretching and breathing exercises every day with my mum.

“ Sometimes I get stressed about opponents or boxing and yoga helps get my mind off the job.

“Yoga should be part of your lifestyle. Whenever I need to relax I turn to yoga and it really does me a power of good.

“I could fight Mike Tyson in his prime and be relaxed because I know I have done the hard work.”

Vassell loves his daily routine at the bank and said: “It’s a normal bank job and I really enjoy it because it’s another role for me.

“Plenty of boxers just box and do nothing else, but I like my job because it keeps my mind off boxing.”

The top-of-the-bill contest sees local hero Craig Watson challenge Lee Purdy for the British welterweight title in a rematch.

Watson lost the title to the Essex man in April, when he was stopped in five rounds at Manchester’s MEN Arena, and is determined to gain revenge.

In the chief supporting contest, Watson’s fellow Oldham fighter Darren Stubbs challenges Bob Ajisafe for the vacant English light-heavyweight title.

Hatton Promotions youngsters on the bill include Austin Hornsby, Dean Halsall and Matthew Clarkson.

The show will be broadcast free from 7pm next Sunday on www.hattonboxing.com
