De La Hoya May File Complaint Over Herrera Scores

By Rick Reeno

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya started off his Saturday night with a burst of frustration. De La Hoya was ringside for two competing televised events in Las Vegas.

He began his ringside duties at the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino, where Golden Boy promoted junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera suffered a controversial twelve round unanimous decision loss to rising prospect Jose Benavidez Jr. The match was part of an HBO televised tripleheader.

The official judges scored it 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112. Most of the writers at ringside had similar scores - but in favor of Herrera. HBO's unofficially judge, Harold Lederman, scored is 116-112 for Herrera.

After the fight was over, De La Hoya hurried over to the MGM Grand, where his company was staging a Showtime televised card with Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander in the main event.

"I was shocked. Herrera will bounce back. We're going to bring him back. He will bounce back and that's what Herrera is all about," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com.

When the final bell rang, De La Hoya was convinced that Herrera had clearly won the contest.

"It's a shame, because Las Vegas has very competent judges and a great commission, so decisions like this don't help the sport. I had it like maybe 8-4 for Herrera and that's me not being an expert," De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya is not going to walk away quietly. He plans to speak with the Nevada State Athletic Commission and he's considering the possibility of filing a complaint over the scorecards.

"We'll what the commission does. We'll see if they do anything. We're going to talk to  the commission and possibly put in a complaint," De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya was not the only promoter on the receiving end of bad scorecards. Bob Arum of Top Rank, who promotes Benavidez, was furious by the end of the night.

One of the bigger names in Top Rank's stable, former two-division world champion Timothy Bradley battled Diego Chaves to a controversial twelve round split draw - in a fight where nearly everyone saw Bradley as the winner. The scores were 115-113 for Bradley, 116-112 for Chaves and 114-114 for the draw.

Arum may have been on the winning end of the Herrera fight, but don't be surprised if he files a complaint of his own, regarding Bradley-Chaves, with the NSAC. Following the match, he voiced his anger with the judges - especially Julie Lederman [daughter of HBO's Harold].

"It was a bad decision. Julie Lederman should not be judging fights. Her scorecard for Chaves was an absolute disgrace," Arum stated.
