Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) will be present for the May 4th showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero, taking place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. De La Hoya says Canelo is pushing to fight Mayweather in the fall. De La Hoya, along with Canelo and his management team, will watch the fight and make a decision on the Mexican champion's future after the Showtime pay-per-view is over.
“Canelo would love to have Mayweather as his next opponent, but we'll make that decision on May 4th," De La Hoya said.
De La Hoya was very impressed with Canelo's twelve round decision victory on Saturday night over Austin Trout, which took place before a crowd of nearly 40,000 fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
“From the third round I could see that Trout was getting frustrated. Canelo grows with every single fight and shows that he is something special. When a fight is complicated there is a lot of tension, so of course he was a little tired at the end, but in general he was marvelous in the ring," De La Hoya said.
