Crolla, Perez Vow To Make Statement In Rematch

By Terence Dooley

Anthony Crolla’s rematch with Colombia's Darleys Perez was formally announced at a press conference in Manchester earlier today.  The fight takes place on an Eddie Hearn-promoted bill at the Manchester Arena on November 21st and the visitor’s WBA World lightweight title will be on the line once again.

They fought to a majority draw in July.  Perez lost two points for low blows late on, many felt he had lost the fight but he retained his belt after the judges couldn’t split them.  This time, though, Crolla has vowed to produce an empathetic performance to make his world title dream a reality.

“I’ve got to move on, there’s no point crying over spilt milk—bad decisions happen in boxing,” said Crolla (29-4-3, 11 early) when speaking to Sky Sports.  “I thought it was very hard to see it any other way than a win for me.

“I don’t want to leave it to chance this time.  It’s not about going in there reckless looking for an early finish, that’s not how I fight, but I’m not leaving it to the judges this time.  The controversy is just fuel to the fire, it’s added to it.  To do it (win a world title) in my home city of Manchester would be great.”

He added: “People say maybe he underestimated me last time, I believe that I shocked him on the night with my performance and there will be a better Anthony Crolla on the night (of the rematch) as well.  I’m only going to get better.  I live clean and train hard all the time.  You never stop learning in this sport.”

Perez (32-1-1, 20 KOs) believes he will also produce the goods, telling the assembled press that he is excited about travelling to Manchester again and fighting in front of a packed arena.

“I’m very happy to get another fight as the first one was very good,” said Perez“I’m going to be 101% and I’ll win clear. The people here love boxing and I’m very excited to fight again in front of a great crowd again.”
