BoxingScene.com has received word from Top Rank that next Friday at Yankee Stadium in New York City, Miguel Cotto and WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman will officially announce their June 5 bout. Foreman's WBA title will be on the line. Cotto-Foreman is the first fight to be staged at Yankee Stadium since September 28, 1976, when Muhammad Ali retained the WBA/WBC heavyweight titles with a twelve round decision over Ken Norton. Both Cotto and Foreman are promoted by Top Rank.
"These are exciting times for boxing and for Top Rank," said Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum.
While Cotto and Foreman are easy speaking guys, there will be tension at the press conference. According to Foreman's manager Murray Wilson, head trainer Joe Grier will be wearing a new jacket proclaiming "Here is the World's #1 Trainer."
The jacket is a direct shot at Cotto's new head trainer, Emanuel Steward, who plans to appear at the press conference with Team Cotto.
Over the last two weeks, BoxingScene.com has posted a few stories outlining the tug of war for Steward's services. In February, Steward had agreed to join Foreman's camp as an advisor for a three week period. In March, Steward began talking with Cotto's camp, who presented a more lucrative offer. When Team Foreman became aware that Steward was talking with both sides of the fight, they withdrew their offer and told the veteran trainer "he was no longer welcome."
