As reported last week, the fighter recognized as the number one pound-for-pound in the world, Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez, will be facing Puerto Rican contender McWiliams Arroyo on April 23rd at the Forum in Los Angeles, California.
For Gonzalez (44-0, 38KOs), this will be his third HBO televised co-feature where he's packaged with WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who on the April card will defend his world titles against undefeated mandatory contender Dominic Wade.
According to Carlos Blandon, who manages Gonzalez, this could very well be the last 'co-featured' slot for his fighter, who holds the WBC flyweight championship.
He says HBO is very interested in showcasing Gonzalez in a main event position. A main event for a fighter who weighs 112-pounds would require a very good opponent. Blandon hopes they are able to secure Juan Francisco Estrada, who holds the WBA/WBO flyweight titles.
Gonzalez holds a very tough decision win over Estrada when the two of them were junior flyweights. That fight took place back in 2012 at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles.
"Yeah, hopefully this will be the final co-feature for Roman. HBO is very interested in placing him in a main event and we are grateful to God and hope that now everything will come together and that he's able to secure a great opponent, a opponent like Estrada would be nice - but for now we are very thankful to God to have [an important role on a card for] a great champion like Gennady Golovkin, and we're thankful for the relationship with K2 Promotions and Teiken Promotions," said Blandon to ESPN Deportes.
Gonzalez will train in Costa Rica starting in March. He welcomes the fight with Arroyo.
"I am very happy and grateful to God. I'm glad it's Arroyo who is a strong opponent, an amateur medalist, he gave a good fight to [Amnat Ruenroeng]," Gonzalez said.
"Arroyo is a very dangerous, strong fighter. His brother is a world champion and as time passes every opponent will be preparing very well to try to defeat me. McWilliams is definitely an excellent opponent."
