Cesar Juarez Blasts Out Soto in The Ninth Round

By Rafael Soto

At the Gymnasium of the Metro Workers Union in Mexico City, Cesar "Corazon" Juarez scored a ninth round knockout with a savage right hand that connected on Colombian Wilber Soto to knock him out at the 46 second mark in what was the co-main event of the card.

At the start of the fight it seemed Juarez (22-6 and 17 KO's) would soon end the fight, but Soto (21-4 and 11 KO's) knew how to deal the ferocious attacks of the big puncher.

Juarez seemed tired in the fifth round, but never stopped going forward or launching hurricane attacks, although many of the punches did not reach Soto, who at times dominated the fight.

That ninth round came and Juarez landed a powerful right hand to the face of Soto, who fell face down on the canvas, and referee José Medel waved off the contest when the corner of the Colombian entered the ring and the fight was over.

"I feel happy about the knockout, but not very satisfied because I could not finish my opponent off earlier. He was very elusive, but we were able to finish it, tonight starts my path to a new world title opportunity," said Juarez.

In the main event, Jessica Nery Plata gave a shocker when she was crowned the new WBA minimumweight world champion by taking a split decision against Silvia ¨Guerrerita¨ Torres in an epic feminine war.

It was an exciting fight from start to finish where both were trading punches, which resulted in an unforgettable fifth round and they continued in the sixth.

After the ten rounds the judges gave scores of 97-94 for Torres, 98-93 and 96-94 for Nery Plata, who fulfilled her dream of being world champion and fulfill a promise to her deceased mother.

" There are many mixed feelings, this belt is in memory of my mom, who left me months ago and I'm happy for the big fight we gave, I always felt in control of the fight and I liked that the audience at the end of the fight was with me supporting me," said Nery (22-2, 3 KOs).

Now former world champion Silvia Torres (19-1, 6 KOs) acknowledged that the fight was very hard, hard fought and that it could have been a decision for either of them.
