Cano Wins Bloody Battle, Mijares Scores Knockout Win

Miguel Rivera

The results are in the books for the "War in Tlalnepantla" put together by promoter Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing. The card took place at Sports Tlalli.

In the main event,  Irma "Whirlwind" Garcia won a ten round unanimous decisions over Yesenia Tovar to pikc up the International bantamweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC). Garcia (13-1-1, 2 KOs), who previously held the WBA title, had too much experience and skill for Tovar (3-2-2). The scores were 100-90, 100-91 and 99-91

In the co-featured bout, former 140-pound interim world champion Pablo Cesar Cano went to war with Yucatan Silverio "Chamaco" Ortiz over ten rounds. Cano (29-4-1, 21 KO's) was cut and bloody but picked up the win in a foul filled clash with Ortiz (34-16-0, 16 KO's).

Both fighters were throwing big punches from the opening bell. In the second, Cano crashed down from a hard low blow and needed time to recover. During the third, a clash of heads opened up a cut above the right eye of Cano, which cost Ortiz a point. In the sixth round, Ortiz lost another point for hitting Cano while he was down. Cano had gone down from a slip.

Cano's cut became much worse as the fight continued and he has trouble seeing from the right eye, but he powered his way to victory, with a big knockdown scored in the eight round to seal the deal on a decision win.

Former world champion Cristian "Diamante" Mijares (53-8-2, 26 KOs) stayed busy by breaking down and knocking out Cristian Arrazola (17-10-2, 12 KOs) in the seventh round.

Bad match making for 2. Stay busy bouts 4 these 2 who are not contenders...Pepe Gomez's bouts have slipped poorly in quality the past 18 months...
