Canelo vs. Lopez Sellout Crowd Pulls in $1.6 Million

by David P. Greisman

This past Saturday’s junior middleweight world title bout between Canelo Alvarez and Josesito Lopez had more than 14,000 people in attendance and brought in more than $1.6 million in ticket sales, according to figures provided by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

A total of 12,860 tickets were sold to the eight-fight card that took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and aired, in part, on Showtime. Another 1,659 tickets were given away for free. No tickets went unsold.

The card produced a total gate of $1,618,150.

In the main event, Alvarez topped Lopez via fifth-round technical knockout. He improved to 41-0-1 with 30 knockouts, while Lopez fell to 30-5 with 18 knockouts and 1 “no decision.”
