Canelo-Kirkland: Frankie Gomez-Humberto Soto in Play

By Steve Kim

On May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez takes on James Kirkland as the main event attraction on HBO. According to industry sources, a fight between junior welterweights, former champion Humberto Soto and unbeaten prospect Frankie Gomez, will be the opening bout on the broadcast.

While nothing has been finalized, contracts are out to both fighters and their camps.

The 34-year-old Soto, who has mark of 65-8-2 (35 KO's) is coming off a ten round decision over John Molina back in September. Gomez, who is 23-years-old and has a record of 18-0 (13 KO's),  last fought in July where he out-pointed veteran Vernon Paris over ten.
