Canelo's Coach: Golovkin Reached His Limit, He Won't Be Better!

By Miguel Rivera

Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso, the manager and co-trainer of Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs), believes his boxer will be new and improved when he steps in the ring for a second time with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs).

Canelo, in his first official fight at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds, challenged Golovkin last September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After twelve rounds, the contest ended in a controversial split draw. One judge had it 114-114, with another scoring 115-113 for Golovkin and a highly criticized card of 118-110 for Canelo.

The rematch was officially announced a few weeks ago, and takes place on the Cinco De Mayo date of May 5th. The venue has yet to be announced, but expect the second fight to return to Las Vegas.

Chepo explains that his boxer improves with each passing contest - but he does not believe Golovkin, at 35-years-old, can do the same.

They plan to make several adjustments and intend to do a strategic job on GGG.

The veteran trainer is not expecting anything new from Golovkin, he expects to see the same fighter they faced in the ring last year. Chepo saw no improvements or adjustments from Golovkin in his last few fights.

"In every fight Saul has showed progress, but we believe that Golovkin is always the same fighter.... [Golovkin] has reached his limit, but Saul is a thinking fighter. Saul causes problems in the ring and I'm positive he will cause problems for Golovkin," Chepo told Beto Gonzalez.

"We can not [play around with] Golovkin, because it is very risky to get hit with the wrong punch. But I insist, Golovkin has already reached his limit and as they say in my ranch - "an old dog does not learn new tricks," so I don't think Golovkin is going to surprise Canelo - but we will be the ones who will surprise him."
