Broner's Coach: We'll Beat Jessie Vargas in Spectacular Fashion!

By Ryan Burton

Last week Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) was in camp training for his April 21st showdown against Omar Figueroa.  Then on Sunday it was revealed that Figueroa had pulled out of the fight with an injured rotator cuff.

Just 24 hours later he is training for a new opponent and for a fight in a different weight class. Broner will now face former two-division champion Jessie Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs) at a catchweight of 144 pounds.

Broner, a former four division world champion, has made it clear that long time trainer Mike Stafford is still part of his team but has added Kevin Cunningham as his head trainer.  The world class trainer also guides former two-division champion Devon Alexander and trained former multi-division champion Cory Spinks for several years.

The challenges that the heavy handed Figueroa and boxer-puncher Vargas present are very different.  There are still about seven weeks until fight night to prepare for change of opponents and Cunningham is very confident that his fighter will make a statement on April 21st.

"I found out today about the change. It is a totally different fight now, a totally different game plan. It is a totally different fighter who brings a different approach. I like the fight. I think it is a good match up," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.

"Trust and believe that AB will be prepared to deal with it whether it is Figueroa or Vargas.  One thing I can say for sure is that Adrien Broner will win this fight in spectacular fashion."

The Showtime televised triple header will also air Jermall Charlo versus Hugo Centeno for the interim WBC middleweight title and former super featherweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis against former featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar - who collide for a vacant WBA belt.
