British News Roundup: Martin Murray Helps Train Students

By Terence Dooley

Boxing can help people get fit, escape poverty and increase their self-confidence, it could and should also be used to fight extremism according to Bristol North West’s Conservative MP Charlotte Leslie.

Leslie used Prime Minister’s Questions to draw attention to a report published last year that suggests boxing can help young people turn their lives around and she has advocated that it should be used to help in the battle against radicalisation.

The all-parliamentary group on boxing published the positive report about the sport last March.  It called for additional funding for amateur clubs around the country and the promotion of boxing in prison to help trim the reoffending rate.  Other issues such as health were considered in relation to boxing.

“Our prisons can still be centres of radicalisation,” she stated during PMQs.  “Will the Prime Minister look at all measures, including those in the all-party boxing report, on preventing troubled young people from falling into the jaws of these dangerously screwed-up predatory extremists?”  David Cameron responded by saying he will look at the report.

Super middleweight contender and former world title challenger Martin Murray has returned back to school.  The 33-year-old went back to Cowley, his old school, to train some sixth form BTEC Sports students.  Laura Finnigan and Dave Llewellyn organised the session, Dave and Murray are both former classmates of Murray.

"David's a good mate of mine and we've stayed good friends and I've done this at other schools in the past too,” said Murray when speaking to Simon Mulligan of the St. Helens Star.  “The students have been great, they'll have a laugh while doing it but they are also getting better.”

Murray recently called for a bout against fellow 168lber George Groves, who fights on Saturday night, as he bids to get himself back into contention following his recent world title reverse against WBO holder Arthur Abraham.
