Pick It: TBRB #1 Errol Spence vs. Carlos Ocampo (Saturday, Showtime, 10 PM EST)
The World Cup is in full swing leaving networks like TyC without much room for the sweet science this week. That doesn’t mean there is no boxing on tap. IBF welterweight titlist Errol Spence (23-0, 20 KO) has some big name opponents out there but first he has to deal with a mandatory in Ocampo.
It’s part of a tripleheader where the main event will probably be the least competitive fight. Former Jr. lightweight titlist Javier Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KO) lost a debatable decision his last out after missing weight in a lightweight title shot against Robert Easter.
Now he faces Jr. welterweight Adrian Granados (18-6-2, 12 KO) in what could be a war.
In Jr. featherweight title action, streaking Daniel Roman (24-2-1, 9 KO) defends the WBA belt against Moises Flores (25-0, 17 KO). The last time we saw Flores, he was knocked out a split second after the bell against Guillermo Rigondeaux, resulting in a No Contest.
Roman-Flores should last at least a little longer than that and might just steal the show.
Additional Show to Watch For
Saturday – BeIn Sports Espanol (11 PM EST): Zepeda vs. Ramirez
If one of the undercard clashes on Showtime doesn’t fully steal the show, set the DVR for this one.
We’ve got a solid WBA lightweight title eliminator in Mexicali. California’s Jose Zepeda (28-1, 23 KO) suffered a dislocated shoulder in his only shot at a title to date against Terry Flanagan in 2015. He’s on the verge of a second chance.
He’ll face undefeated Carlos Diaz (26-0, 13 KO) of Mexico in what looks like a pick ‘em fight. BeIn Espanol hasn’t been the hardcore delight it was a few years ago but this is a step in the right direction.
