Pick It: TBRB #2 Gilberto Ramirez vs. Roamer Angulo (Saturday, ESPN, 9 PM EST)
Super middleweight was one of the hottest divisions in boxing not long ago. It’s not far from hot right now. The WBSS has produced some fireworks with a compelling final waiting to be scheduled. Could the winner eventually see the winner of this one?
The WBO titlist Ramirez (37-0, 25 KO) is good television and is still showing signs of improvement. He’s got a serious challenger here. Angulo (23-0, 20 KO) is a big punching Colombian but he’s still largely unproven and already 34. This doesn’t look like a distance affair full of science and, with the World Cup pushing boxing off center stage to a degree, it’s a good way to stoke the fire until the really good stuff starts again.
Additional Show to Watch For
Friday – ESPN (9 PM EST): Ellis vs. Mosquera
Welterweight Rashidi Ellis (19-0, 13 KO) is getting into contention. He is rated eleventh by the IBF and has a veteran who he should be able to beat as he builds his credentials. Alberto Mosquera (25-3-2, 16 KO) has taken all his defeats by knockout but enters having won three straight.
Saturday – ESPN+ & BoxNation (2:30 PM EST): Conlan vs. Dos Santos
Northern Irish Olympian Michael Conlan (7-0, 5 KO) makes his home debut in Belfast as he continues his arc towards a first title shot. Adeilson Dos Santos (19-4, 15 KO) has experience but he’s struggled recently with losses in two of his last three. One of those losses was a title shot at 122 lbs. against Jesse Magdaleno so he’ll be a good gauge of where Conlan is and how far he has to go.
