Negotiations are ongoing for a September fight between Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34KOs) of Argentina and Viktor Postol (27-0, 11KOs) of Ukraine. The fight will have the vacant junior welterweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) at stake.
The WBC belt was dropped by Danny Garcia, who has not defended the title since early 2014 and his last two fights took place at a catch-weight above the 140-pound limit. His next fight, against Paulie Malignaggi in August, will take place at the full welterweight limit of 147-pounds.
After Garcia vacated, the WBC ordered Matthysse and Postol to fight each other - and both fighters accepted.
"We're looking at September. We have a lot of interest in that fight. We are talking with the Argentinian government with our partner [Mario Arano]. Hopefully we'll have that signed, sealed and delivered very soon," said Matthysse's promoter, Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya, to BoxingScene.com.
The venue, and country, has not been determined - but De La Hoya would love to see the fight take place at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Last April at StubHub, Matthysse had a 'Fight of The Year' battle with John Molina.
"It all depends on what kind of offer we get from Argentina, but I'll you one thing - I'd love to see that fight at the Stubhub here in Los Angeles. That's a perfect, perfect venue for that," De La Hoya said.
