Robert Garcia, trainer of Marcos Maidana, says training camp is going very well for the scheduled rematch with WBC/WBA welterweight and junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather won a twelve round majority decision in their first fight in May.
“Training camp has been going great. We have been doing more sparring and working on keeping a distance between him and Floyd. I think that was the biggest thing that we needed to work on after seeing film of the first fight. He needed to not be so aggressive to ensure that he is fresh for all 12 rounds," Garcia said.
Garcia and Mayweather traded words for most of the media tour. The veteran coach was unhappy with Mayweather comparing Maidana's fighting style to that of a Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Mayweather claims Maidana is very dirty fighter and used many questionable tactics during their fight.
“I don’t like the way that Floyd talks about my fighter. On the media tour he was telling everyone that my fighter fights like an MMA fighter and was constantly disrespecting him and I didn’t appreciate that,” Garcia said.
