World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco said he would like to make the next defense of his crown against his Mexican countryman Sergio "Yeyo" Thompson - because he earned his shot in the ring.

DeMarco was scheduled to face Jorge Linares in a rematch on July 7 in Los Angeles, but last Saturday night in Cancun - Thompson shocked the boxing world with a two round stoppage of Linares.

"The victory that he earned last Saturday in Cancun, beating former world champion Jorge Linares by knockout in two rounds, was a big surprise for many people - but not for me because I knew about the explosive power in his fists," Linares said.

DeMarco (27-2-1, 20 KOs) said he would like to trade punches with "Yeyo" (22-2, 20 KOs) in either Cancun, in his native city of Los Mochis or even in Tijuana.

The champion will resume his training activities on Monday.
