Andy Lee, O'Sullivan Both Ready To Face Daniel Jacobs

BoxingScene.com reported last week that former champion Daniel Jacobs has two Irish middleweights on his mind for his next fight.

Spike O’Sullivan, who last month scored a bruising knockout victory over Antoine Douglas, still appears to be the frontrunner - but former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (35-3-1, 24 KOs) is also in the mix.

Jacobs' return is being targeted for April at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jacobs, who last year signed a promotional deal with  British promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, is having some trouble reaching an agreement with O'Sullivan with respect to the financial terms - which promoted his team to contact Lee.

Lee has only fought once since losing his WBO middleweight strap to Billy Joe Saunders back in December 2015. He returned in March of last year with a victory over KeAndrae Leatherwood.

During a recent interview on Newstalk 106FM’s Off The Ball, Lee explained that he was contacted to do the Jacobs fight.

“I was under the assumption that it was going to be Spike O’Sullivan who would fight him. It seemed like they were in talks and it seemed like both sides were up for it," Lee said.

“But last [week], I got a text from [trainer/manager] Adam Booth just saying he has had contact from Eddie Hearn and there’s a possibility to fight Danny Jacobs, would I be interested?”

“Of course, I said ‘yes’, and that’s where it is, there’s nothing more than that. I wouldn’t have mentioned it, only for Eddie Hearn mentioning it today in an interview. I let them know I want the fight, let’s get it on.”

However, Paschal Collins - trainer for O'Sullivan (27-2, 19 KOs) - says his boxer is close to agreeing to a deal to fight Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs).

"Let's end all the speculation and rumors. Spike O'Sullivan and Daniel Jacobs is still very close to being agreed. Myself and Spike want it and hopefully we can get the fight agreed in the coming days," Collins stated.
