Ancajas Floors Gonzalez Three Times, Stops Him in 10th Round

By Keith Idec

Jerwin Ancajas doesn’t want to be called the next Manny Pacquiao.

But much like his fellow Filipino southpaw early in his career, the aggressive Ancajas has fight-changing power, doesn’t hesitate to take chances and can be a lot of fun to watch. Ancajas, who’s promoted by Pacquiao, continued his rise Saturday night by knocking out Mexico’s Israel Gonzalez in the 10th round of their 115-pound title fight in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The 26-year-old Ancajas (29-1-1, 20 KOs) made his fourth defense of the IBF super flyweight title he won in September 2016. ESPN televised his victory over Gonzalez as part of the Gilberto Ramirez-Habib Ahmed undercard from American Bank Center.

Ancajas also ended the 21-year-old Gonzalez’s eight-fight winning streak and dropped his record to 21-2 (8 KOs).

Gonzalez gave great effort in the scheduled 12-rounder, but he couldn’t hurt Ancajas, who had no such difficulty. Ancajas’ straight left hand dropped Gonzalez to the seat of his trunks with 1:34 to go in the 10th round.

A brave Gonzalez got to one knee and then his feet. Ancajas attacked him immediately and 20 seconds later, Gonzalez went down again, this time from an even harder straight left by Ancajas.

Referee Rafael Ramos waved an immediate end to the action after Ancajas’ second knockdown of the 10th round and third knockdown of the fight. The time of the stoppage was 1:50 of the 10th round.

Ancajas landed a left hook to the body and followed it with a right hook to the head in the eighth round. Ancajas clipped Gonzalez with a right hook late in the seventh round, the best punch he landed in a couple rounds.

By the halfway point in the fight, it was clear that the game Gonzalez wouldn’t go away easily. Ancajas controlled the action, but couldn’t hurt Gonzalez the way he did when he dropped him in the first round.

An aggressive Gonzalez had some success during the fifth round, in which he hit Ancajas with several straight right hands. Ancajas came back later in the fifth to land left hands and backed up Gonzalez.

Earlier in their bout, Ancajas continually hit Gonzalez with his straight left hand and moved out of Gonzalez’s punching range before Gonzalez could counter him.

Ancajas dropped Gonzalez with a left hand just 55 seconds into the fight. Gonzalez got right to his feet and was able to finish the first round on steady legs.
