Alfredo Angulo Confirms 8/20 Return, Eyes WBC Title

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (19-1, 16KOs) has confirmed an earlier report on BoxingScene.com, that he will indeed return to the ring on August 20th in Mexicali, Mexico. The opponent is unknown, but Angulo does want a shot at the WBC junior middleweight title, which is currently held by Saul Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KOs). He plans to attend this Saturday's fight between Alvarez and Ryan Rhodes, with the intention of challenging the winner.

Angulo spoke with Sal Rodriguez, and said that he is currently training at Champs Gym with bantamweight Ábner Mares, who fights on Aug. 13 in Las Vegas against IBF champion Joseph Agbeko. Angulo has been away from the ring since last July due a visa issue that prevents him from fighting in the United States.

"We are getting ready for the return. It's assumed that [my fight] will happen on August 20 in Mexicali against someone ranked by the World Boxing Council, but on Saturday I'll be at the fight involving 'Canelo' and I'll see what kind of possibilities are there to make the fight [with the winner]. I'll be there," Angulo told Sal Rodriguez.

I blame Gary Shaw... if El Perro had a decent promoter, they would have built him up in mex by now and the Mexican public would've been clammering for a Canelo showdown, rest assured Angulo would spank that a$$!

Thank god he's coming back. I'd watch el Perro fight just about any bum. An Alvarez fight would be interesting, that kid is strong at 154, but Angulo is a Beast. Still hoping for Angulo/Maidana fight at 150ish. Man, you'd…
