Undefeated Abner Mares, is planning and training to stay unbeaten in his upcoming championship fight against Daniel Ponce de Leon for the WBC featherweight title on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The main event features a welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero.

Mares (25-0-1, 13 KOs) says he has developed a sound training regime.

“I run in the morning and then I spar in the afternoon, and  to finish the day I work out in the gym. I know this will be a very tough fight so I'll keep up the good work” he said.

Mares is working with trainer Clemente Medina at the Elite MMA Academy, in Santa Fe Springs, California.

Medina, who once trained Ponce (44-4, 35 KOs), knows Mares will face a very hard fight against him.

“The fight against Ponce will be very tough, but Mares will be like a beast when he concludes his training and he will be ready to face Daniel.”

Abner grasped glory, when he came back from a knockdown to defeat Vic Darchinyan by split decision.

Mares then conquered the WBC world title over Joseph Agbeko, on August 13th, 2011 in Las Vegas.

"When they asked me to be part of this card, I thought it was a great idea. It'll give us great projection to be on the undercard of Mayweather.

“It'll be a very tough fight against a great fighter, we are going to perform a magnificent fight for the fans hoping we can shine even more than Mayweather’s fight,” he stressed.
