Both Abner Mares and Nonito Donaire have beaten top rated fighters in their last fights which would only naturally lead to a showdown between the two best Super Bantamweight champions. While everyone is asking for this fight to be made, it will come down to each fighter’s promoters. Both have been involved in an ongoing feud which has prevented them from working together.

Mares made it clear he wants Donaire next when he spoke to the media at the post fight press conference and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer echoed those same sentiments. Schaefer revealed they are more than willing to try to make this fight happen.

“With us you have a willing promoter and I am happy to put up a multimillion dollar offer for Nonito Donaire to show up. But I'm not so sure after this performance tonight by Abner Mares that [Donaire's] promoter is going to be all that excited of making this fight. He's probably going to feel it has to marinate a little bit longer but we'll see what happens. There are plenty of different options to get it done but the fact is we want to get it done and we don't believe in marinating stuff. I think it should be the next fight for Abner and Nonito Donaire” said Schaefer.

Both companies have either tried to work together unsuccessfully in the past or refused to even entertain talks of possible fight involving both of their fighters. Schaefer was asked what type of measures or plans would be in place to try to make a Mares-Donaire fight a true possibility.

“Well I think it’s having a dialogue. I don't believe in negotiating through the press is the way to go but if that's the way it has to go we are prepared to do that as well. I think the world wants to see that fight. It’s one of the biggest fights in respective of weight classes which can be made and I think it should be made. There are different ways; we can sit down and try to get it done or there are other ways where one puts an envelope on the table and the other puts one on the table and see who offers the most. There are plenty of different options to get it done” Schaefer responded.

Schaefer also shared his thoughts on who he feels is the best Super Bantamweight right now. It’s no surprise he feels his fighter Mares is better and feels Mares’ resume is also superior to Donaire’s.

“I really think that if you look at Abner's resume and you compare it with the other top  Super Bantamweight Nonito Donaire, and I'm not taking anything away from Nonito because he's a terrific and exciting fighter, but if you really compare the strength of the opposition and when and where Abner fought them, all of those guys were either champions, undefeated, or with one loss at the peak of their careers. In my opinion, and I don't understand and I don't make up those lists, but in my opinion there is no question about it that Abner Mares belongs ahead of Nonito Donaire on every single pound for pound list. No question about it” said Schaefer.

Donaire is scheduled to face Jorge Arce in Houston December 15th and should he be victorious, let’s hope both promotional companies can work together and put on this highly anticipated showdown.
