Coatbridge's WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns has targeted neighbouring Airdrie to host his next title fight which is set to take place in the summer.

The 28-year-old retained his crown with a unanimous points win over Namibian Paulus Moses at a packed and raucous Braehead Arena in Glasgow on Saturday night.

Burns believes the 6,000 capacity at the venue on the outskirts of Glasgow would be too small for the all-British clash with Essex fighter Kevin Mitchell, who is set to be his next opponent, and would like to take it outdoors to the home of Airdrie United.

"A fight in Airdrie in the summer is definitely something we could do," he said.

"I think it would be a big hit because I'm from that area.

"I think it would be a sell-out because the fans in Scotland showed they will come out and support me.

"I'll sit down next week with Frank Warren (promoter) and Alex Morrison (manager) and we'll discuss my next move."

For much of the night the unassuming Scot found it difficult to pin down the 33-year-old challenger who showed good resilience and impressive punching power.

Burns, though, showed his superiority when required and he believes he is becoming more assured with each fight.

He said: "I think my confidence is getting there although I've always been confident without being cocky. I just enjoy fighting.

"I just like to get out there and get on with the business."

Burns gets married in Mexico at the end of the month but will be back in the gym after a few days' rest.

He said: "I'm going to take a few days off and then I'll get straight back into the gym.

"We get married in Mexico, we fly out on the 21st and get married on the 30th so I don't want to lose my six pack for the photos."
