NEW YORK – Russell Peltz couldn’t help but think of the late Teddy Brenner on Wednesday. Peltz always reflects fondly on the legendary Brenner when he returns to Madison Square Garden, the building where the masterful matchmaker put on so many terrific fights during his Hall-of-Fame career. Peltz considers Jason Sosa-Yuriorkis Gamboa just the type of bout Brenner would’ve gladly made during his run at The Garden.
Former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (27-2, 17 KOs) is taking no chances for his HBO televised return on November 25th, when he steps in as a late replacement to fight Jason Sosa in an HBO televised fight from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Gamboa's career is on the ropes after suffering a TKO loss to Robinson Castellanos in May of this year in Las Vegas.
If Yuriorkis Gamboa can’t beat Jason Sosa later this month, his career, for all intents and purposes, is over. Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, said as much during a conference call Tuesday. “This is probably like his last chance,” Gomez said. “This is do-or-die for him, I think. And that’s the way he’s taking it, as do-or-die.”
Junior lightweight contenders Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jason Sosa will square off on Nov. 25, Golden Boy Promotions announced Monday morning. The 10 round bout will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City and will open a three-bout HBO telecast. In the main event, Sergey Kovalev and Vyacheslav Shabranskyy will battle in a 12 round bout for the WBO light heavyweight title.
Former unified featherweight champion Yuriorkis "El Ciclon de Guantanamo" Gamboa (27-2, 17 KOs) will step in to fight Jason "El Canito" Sosa (20-2-4, 15 KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight fight at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in the televised opener to Kovalev vs. Shabrankskyy. The event takes place Saturday, Nov. 25 and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
