Jay Deas, manager of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, is furious at the shocking news that their upcoming opponent, Luis Ortiz, tested positive for a banned substance. World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman broke the news late Thursday night.

Their fight is scheduled for November 4th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, but more than likely Ortiz will be pulled and replaced by another opponent.

This is Wilder's third scheduled opponent in the last 16 months to test positive for a banned substance.

For Ortiz, it's the second time he failed a drug test. He was popped for nandrolone, an anabolic steroid, after blowing out Lateef Kayode in one round in September 2014.

Wilder was set to face Alexander Povetkin last May, and that fight was canceled after the Russian boxer tested positive for meldonium, And then Wilder was set to face Andrzej Wawrzyk earlier this year, and he was pulled after testing positive for anabolic steroids, and then replaced by Gerald Washington.

Wilder has been out of the ring since stopping Washington in February, and right now there is no indication of what will happen next. The most likely opponent is mandatory challenger Bermane Stiverne, who is already set to fight on the undercard against Dominic Breazeale.

“This is very early. We don’t exactly what’s going to happen,” Deas said to the Tuscaloosa News. “Right now until we hear differently, everything is still a go for Nov. 4. Whether that’s Ortiz or not will be determined very soon.

“We’re extremely frustrated and even angry at the situation. We know Deontay is clearly the most feared heavyweight on the planet because to have three of his last fight opponents (that were scheduled) test positive is just absurd. We stand for clean boxing. This kind of thing is very frustrating when you’re trying to make the biggest fights for the fans and these guys test positive.”

“Deontay told him voice-to-voice at the press conference, ‘Don’t mess this up. Meaning stay clean. Ortiz wasn’t at the press conference, so one has to wonder if there’s a reason for that.”
