UFC President Dana White is standing firm on the possibility that retired former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather will make the jump to an MMA cage.
White claims that a meeting is taking place with Mayweather's team to discuss the idea of working with the UFC in some capacity, although it's not clear what the meeting will be about.
Back in August, Mayweather briefly came out of retirement to secure a tenth round stoppage over UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, in a boxing match, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
A few weeks ago, Mayweather took to social media and revealed that the UFC had approached him regarding the possibility of a multi-fight deal and claimed he could pocket a billion dollars from the venture.
“Don’t count anything out on Floyd Mayweather coming over to the UFC. Anything is possible,” White said on FOX Sports 1’s Undisputed.
“You guys know I didn’t believe that McGregor-Mayweather would happen and it did, so anything is possible. I have a meeting with [Floyd’s team] today.”
The meeting between Mayweather’s team could also be part of White's venture into the sport of boxing, which he once again disclosed as a pending direction for the UFC's parent company.
“I’m interested in getting into boxing in 2018. So we’ll see,” White said.
White was wearing Zuffa Boxing shirts on the press tour for the McGregor and Mayweather showdown and conducted numerous interviews regarding his intention to have the UFC and their parent company branch out to boxing.
He wants to work with other promoters on the venture, and one of them is Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.
As far as Mayweather, most believe the very idea of the undefeated boxer, at 40 years old and having zero MMA experience, making the jump to the UFC - as a fighter - is not very realistic and not likely to ever happen.
There is some talk that the UFC is keeping the Mayweather rumors alive to generate mainstream press during television rights negotiations.
