World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman is not happy with some of statements that he's been reading in the press as it relates to the mandated fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) and WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
Last year, Miguel Cotto and Canelo were given permission to fight for the WBC title - on the promise that the winner would face Golovkin next.
Canelo won a twelve round unanimous decision to capture the belt, but he wasn't ready to face Golovkin just yet.
After negotiating with the WBC, the sanctioning body issued an order which allowed both boxers to take an interim bout - as long as they fought each other in the summer.
Golovkin had his interim-bout on Saturday night and knocked out IBF mandatory Dominic Wade in two rounds at The Forum in Los Angeles.
Canelo is scheduled to defend his belt on May 7th against Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
If Canelo wins, he has 15 days to make a decision on whether or not he intends to fight Golovkin in the fall
In some reason interviews, Canelo has refused to make a commitment to fighting GGG in 2016. He feels the fight will be bigger next year. Canelo is also requesting a catch-weight of 155-pounds, which Golovkin has rejected.
Sulaiman warns that his organization will strip away the title if Canelo attempts to push back the contest any further. If he loses his belt, then Golovkin will become the WBC champion at 160-pounds.
"If Canelo beats Khan and does not meet his obligation to face Golovkin, then the WBC will have no choice but to strip Canelo of his belt. This is stipulated in the rules and this is how we will act," said Sulaiman.
