World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman is a very happy man, because a brand new belt will be presented to the winner of the upcoming rematch between WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
The rematch has been finalized for May 5th as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.
"The new belt will coincide with May 5. We are about to announce the new edition of the belt - which this year is the 'Adolfo López Mateos.' We are very happy, motivated. Last year it was the Huichol belt and that was spectacular, and this year will the belt will also be very beautiful," Sulaiman said.
The first fight took place last September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and it ended in a very controversial twelve round split draw.
"We're just waiting for the venue to be confirmed. It's the fight that everyone is waiting for, I am glad that the tiebreaker is going to take place, this fight is a rematch between the two fighters of greater importance at world level," Sulaiman added.
The previous week, Sulaiman had the opportunity to speak with Golovkin in Sochi, Russia, and he says the unified champion is anxious about the fight.
"He's eager to get in the ring again, I had the opportunity to talk with him, he's happy, ready to get into training camp, there will be no promotional tour, just a conference and from there to his camp," Sulaiman said.
Things may get interesting when the WBC announces their new commemorative title, because last year Canelo rejected the WBC's involvement in the Cinco De Mayo fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr - and he also refused to fight for the WBC title when he fought Golovkin in the fall.
"I have not spoken to him, but you know our position.. we have been supportive of him. Golovkin will be defending his title and I'm sure everything will be different from the last fight," Sulaiman concluded.
