World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman spoke with WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs), and the Mexican superstar informed him that he's very motivated to face mandatory challenger Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), who holds the WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight belts.

There are ongoing negotiations which began a few days ago. A purse bid has been set for May 24th if the two sides are unable to reach an agreement beforehand.

Sulaiman was ringside last Saturday in Las Vegas and watched Canelo pull out a brutal sixth round knockout of Amir Khan to retain the WBC belt.

Since the outcome of that fight, the WBC leader has spoken with Canelo and both men have a good feeling about the likelihood of a deal being reached for the contest.

Sulaiman explained how his organization put the fight into motion and commented on the current status of the negotiations.

"After some discussions we finally reached an agreement between Canelo and Golovkin where both of them would make a voluntary defense of their respective title, and that happened in April and May. On Monday the letter of free negotiations was issued to both sides and from there they have 15 days to reach an agreement. And if there is no agreement it will go to a purse bid," said Sulaiman

"Everything is going very well. Regarding Canelo, I spoke with him before the weighin and after the fight. He got a much deserved win...[a win] which got recognized, that captivated people, with a spectacular knockout -and he wants the fight, as does Golovkin. And the world wants the fight."

"We agree that these two fighters are at their best, and this is a fight that would be the 'Fight of The Year.'"
