Warren: Burns The Kind of Fighter Americans Will Love

By Kevin Francis, courtesy of The Daily Star

RICKY BURNS will take his wife Amanda to Las Vegas this week – next time he’ll be taking his boxing gloves!

The Scot, 29, started packing his bags for the holiday as soon as he had successfully defended his WBO world lightweight title against Kevin Mitchell in Glasgow on Saturday.

His fourth round success was easily the best of his 37-fight career then he warned: “Believe me, there is more to come.”

His promoter Frank Warren fully agrees and is now considering showcasing Burns in the United States next year, although the immediate plan is for him to have another defence in the UK in December.

Warren said: “Ricky is just the kind of fighter the American audience will love and he would really go down well in a place like Las Vegas.

“He is the most improved fighter in Britain and he can wow the Americans with his style of boxing.

“I have always rated Ricky and, after the display he produced against Mitchell, he is twice the fighter I thought he was.”

Burns really turned on the style against the 27-year-old Londoner, putting in a performance that had Warren purring with delight.

He said: “I see no reason why he can’t go on now and unify the titles. He is a fighter who is now right at the top of his game.”

Burns ended the contest in devastating style as he twice floored Mitchell in the fourth before referee Terry O’Connor spared the challenger more punishment.

It was his second successful defence and he said: “I’m getting better and better.

“I said all along that Kevin would bring out the best in me – and he did. I felt really good throughout.”

The Coatbridge champion thrilled a partisan crowd as he made it 20 wins in a row against the Dagenham man.

Former British and Commonwealth super-featherweight champion Mitchell had hinted before the fight that defeat would force him to consider quitting.

But afterwards he insisted: “I want to get out fighting again soon. I’ve got to get back working hard, get back sparring hard and fight again in December.”
