Leo Santa Cruz-Victor Terrazas: Golden Boy Wins Bid

BoxingScene.com has been advised that Golden Boy Promotions won the WBC's purse bid for the mandatory fight between WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21KOs) and mandatory challenger Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14KOs). Golden Boy bid $526,000, while Zanfer Promotions put down $451,000. The belt became vacant when Abner Mares moved up to the featherweight division. Terrazas captured the title last month with a close twelve round split decision over Cristian Mijares.

The World Boxing Council has position Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14KOs) as the number one ranked super bantamweight in their latest rankings, making him the mandatory challenger to champion Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21KOs). Santa Cruz made his debut at 122-pounds on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He stopping veteran Alexander Munoz in five rounds on the Mayweather-Guerrero undercard.

Former world champion Vic Darchinyan (39-5-1, 28 KO's) made a successful return to the ring after an almost eight month absence by scoring a fourth round stoppage of Javier Gallo last Saturday night on a bout broadcast on Unimas. "Gallo was a tough fighter. He showed up to win," said Darchinyan. "I'm ready for a big fight. I want Victor Terrazas next for the WBC title."

On Monday afternoon former champion Cristian "Diamante" Mijares arrived at the International Airport in the city of Torreón in high spirits with his wife Rina, his mother Doña Lupita and her brother Roi. Besides being greeted by family and friends, he was also addressed by the local media. This past Saturday night in Mexico City, Mijares fought Victor Terrazas for the vacant WBC super bantamweight title and lost a close split decision. Mijares nearly pulled off the win after dropping Terrazas in the final round and almost finishing him off.

Darchinyan Will Not Step Aside For Donaire-Terrazas

Manager Frank Espinoza advised BoxingScene.com that Vic Darchinyan (38-5-1, 27KOs) will not step aside in order for Nonito Donaire to get the opportunity to face WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas in October. Espinoza was responding to an earlier article on BoxingScene, where Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum had stated that Donaire may possibly remain at 122-pounds and face Terrazas in the fall. Darchinyan, the NABF champion, is the top WBC contender at 122 and first in line for a crack at Terrazas' title. Darchinyan will make his Top Rank promotional debut on May 11th against Javier Gallo at the Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas.

Dethroned WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is likely to face newly crowned WBC champion Victor “Vikingo” Terrazas sometime in October. Donaire who is recovering well from surgery to remove a bone spur and to mend two torn ligaments on his right shoulder last Friday will not move up in weight and face Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez as initially broached by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who told the BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that Donaire “wont be back till October and maybe he’ll fight Terrazas.”

Two Mexican warriors embraced after twelve rounds of war. This past Saturday night at The Arena in Mexico City, Victor Terrazas won a close twelve round split decision over former champion Cristian Mijares to capture the vacant WBC super bantamweight crown. With the fight on the table, Mijares scored a big knockdown in the final round and nearly closed the show as Terrazas was able to use all of his inner strength to reach the final bell.

The scores were 114-113 Mijares, 114-113 Terrazas and 115-112 Terrazas.

Arena, Mexico City, Mexico - Mexican middleweight sensation Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez (25-0, 20KOs) made short work of Colombian Juan de Angel Monterrosa (9-3-1, 9KOs) with a knockout in two minutes of the third round. Using his height and considerable and reach, Gilberto patiently broke down the smaller man with accurate counter punching and some crunching body shots. The sustained accurate barrage was too much, and Monterrosa crumpled against the ropes to be counted out.
