WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1) is just a few weeks away from the biggest fight of his career when he faces former 8-division champion Manny Pacquiao at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will be distributed on pay-per-view independently by promoter Top Rank.
Pacquiao announced his retirement after defeating Tim Bradley decisively in their third bout this past April. Pacquiao floored the durable Bradley twice - the only knockdowns that have occurred in their trilogy - in their most recent meeting.
Vargas believes that fight proves that Pacquiao is still an elite fighter.
"I thought out of the three fights with Bradley that was his best performance and I am sure many would agree. He showed that he still has a lot left in the tank and that will make it a great fight," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
As for his approach to the fight, Vargas said that they game plan for each opponent individually but that this is just another fight for him. He is used to being doubted and will continue to shine.
"It is my first title defense in the welterweight division but this is just another fight for me. You have to understand that I have been doing this since I was 8 years old and since the amateurs people have been saying they would beat me and I had to prove them wrong and that is what I will continue to do. Being the underdog isn't anything new for me," Vargas explained.
