Vargas: Canelo is Young - I'll Be The New Star After KO of Pacquiao

By Miguel Rivera

WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas believes that he will become the next superstar of boxing after his upcoming fight with Manny Pacquiao on November 5th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Vargas, a big underdog in the fight, is not intimidated by the incredible career of Pacquiao, and eight-division world champion.

Last Saturday night, Vargas' compatriot Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez proclaimed himself as the biggest star in boxing after his knockout victory over Liam Smith to capture the WBO junior middleweight title.

"I've always been waiting for this moment. Manny won't not surprise me and he doesn't not scare me. It's a moment I've always expected. This is my moment and I will prepare for victory. Manny, I consider him to be an opponent that will show that I will be the new star of boxing," said Vargas, who has a record of 21-0 and 10KO's, to EL Vocero.

"Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is a young boxer. But the new star [of boxing] has yet to be defined and on November 5 everyone will know who really has that position."

37-year-old Pacquiao, who has a record of 58-6-2 and 38KO's, has a 10 year edge on Vargas and also a massive gap in experience after facing the very best names in the sport.

But Vargas thinks he has the strength to cause a similar surprise that Juan Manuel Marquez produced when he knocked Pacquiao out cold with a single shot in the sixth round of their fourth battle in 2012.

"We are prepared. On November 5, the public will say 'wow this kid is the next star,' and what better way to do it than against Manny Pacquiao. We have seen the weaknesses. We know what he does well and what he does wrong. I know that I can also land a powerful punch like Marquez," he added.
