(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – A new era of Olympic-style boxing began on Monday as the USA Boxing National Championships opened competition with a full array of new rules taking affect for the 323 tournament participants. Monday’s action showcased only male participants with boxers in the elite, senior and youth divisions taking the ring for the first session at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash.
Marshall Sanchez (Houston, Texas) claimed a historic victory in his flyweight elite men’s bout with Abel Soriano (Belleveue, Neb.), taking the first Olympic-style boxing match to be contested without headgear in nearly two decades. Sanchez won a split decision victory over Soriano in the contest to advance on to a quarterfinal match-up with number one seed Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.) on Thursday.
2011 Light Flyweight National Champion David Carlton (Cincinnati, Ohio) dropped his 2013 National Championships opener in the second elite men’s bout of the tournament, losing a unanimous decision to Malik Jackson (Washington DC).
Bantamweight Matthew Guerrero (Manteca, Calif.) enjoyed a first as well, winning the first-ever youth division bout in USA Boxing National Championships action. Guerrero won a unanimous decision victory over Hector Valdez (Dallas, Texas) in their preliminary round contest.
The new 10-point must scoring system has provided new terminology for Olympic-style boxing and bantamweight Ramon Cardenas (San Antonio, Texas) won the first knockout of the tournament. Cardenas’ knockout came at the 1:21 mark of the third round in his preliminary contest with Homero Palomino. Cardenas win advances him on in the youth men’s bantamweight bracket.
The only TKO in Monday’s early session took place in the elite men’s light welterweight division. Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) enjoyed a quick outing in his tournament opener, taking the TKO win at the 2:36 mark of the first round.
The evening session showcased eighteen bouts in the youth males’ lightweight and welterweight divisions and the elite men’s welterweight and heavyweight classes. The two TKO victories of the evening session came in back-to-back bouts in the youth males’ lightweight division. Anthony Marsella (Smithfield, R.I.) took the first of the two early victories in his preliminary contest with Richard Quiterio (Minneapolis, Minn.). Marsella put an end to the bout at 2:40 point in the final round, riding the TKO victory to a berth in the second round where he will face Kolby Dinius-Lecoure (Butte, Mont.) on Tuesday.
With a corner full of Gary Russells guiding him, including his older brother, 2008 Olympian Gary Russell, Jr., younger sibling Gary Antwuan Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.) took the second TKO win over Brannon Terry (Little Rock, Ark.). Terry’s corner threw the towel in at the 2:07 mark of the third round, giving Russell his first victory of the 2013 USA Boxing National Championships. He moves on to a second round showdown with 2012 Junior Olympic National Champion Christian Bermudez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in Tuesday’s competition.
The elite men’s heavyweight division closed the evening’s competition and heavyweight Joshua Temple (St. Louis, Mo.) made his mark on the opening day, winning the sole knockout of the evening session early in his bout with Manuel Contreras (St. Paul, Minn.). Temple floored Contreras in the opening round, ending the contest in the first stanza. The victory advances Temple to Thursday’s quarterfinals.
