U.S. Olympic Team Trials Final Qualifiers: Day 1 Results

USA Boxing Celebrates Independence Day with Seventy-Eight First Round Bouts at the Last Chance Qualifier

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – While Americans across the country spent their day celebrating our nation’s independence, 156 boxing hopefuls took the ring at the Last Chance Qualifier Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio. The event is the final qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials with the 10 champions from the tournament clinching their berths in the London qualifying event.

Two hundred and sixty-eight boxers entered the do or die tournament and 78 bouts opened the tournament action on Monday at the Taft Masonic Center in Cincinnati. With three weight classes with over 32 boxers, the event was extended a day in the light welterweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions. The trio of stacked divisions as well as the bantamweight, lightweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight classes were all contested on Monday.

Several top athletes are competing in Cincinnati with only one shot at their Olympic dream remaining. 2010 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Alex Martin (Chicago, Ill.) staked his claim in his opening bout of the tournament. Martin won a commanding 17-1 decision over Chris Bethel (Tallahassee, Fla.) to advance on to a second round contest with Shakor Jackson (Newark, N.J.).

A talent-laden lightweight division opened the evening action as 2008 Olympian Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) looked to rebound from a disappointing opening round loss at the recent USA Boxing National Championships. Williams passed his first round test in Cincinnati, winning a 43-11 decision over fellow Ohioan Sonny Frederickson (Toledo, Ohio). Williams will take on Antonio Magruder (Suitland, Md.) in Tuesday’s action. Magruder opened his tournament action with an impressive 20-9 victory over Meduardo Zurita, Jr. (Beaverton, Ore.) on Monday night.

2010 USA Boxing National Championships super heavyweight silver medalist Danny Kelly (Washington DC ) also enjoyed a successful opening day. Kelly put an early end to his night, stopping Robert Gutirrez (Corpus Christi, Texas) in the first round of their first round contest. He will face Emin Perry (Tampa, Fla.) in second round competition on Tuesday.

Last Chance Qualifier tournament competition will continue on Tuesday with a whooping 88 preliminary bouts at the Taft Masonic Center. Current results, full brackets and event information can be found at http://usaboxing.org/news/2011/07/03/last-chance-qualifier-tournament/43267.
