Centro de Usos Multiples, Ciudad Obregon, Sonora - As reported by BoxingScene.com on Friday, the original opponent Rodel Mayol (30-5-2, 22KOs) withdrew from a planned fight with WBA flyweight champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez (33-2, 25KOs) - because of a controversial incident at the afternoon weigh-in
Super flyweight Richie Mepranum (25-3-1, 5KOs), who was scheduled for action on the undercard against Juan Francisco Estrada, for the vacant NABF super flyweight title - was approached by Zanfer Promotions to replace Mayol.
Initially, Mepranum's manager Michael Koncz, who also manages Mayol, refused to approve a possible fight with Marquez.
After Koncz refused the fight, Zanfer approached Juan Estrada to replace Mayol.
After everything was said and done, because Mepranum was scheduled to fight one division above Marquez - the two sides were able to reach an understanding for a main event showdown at the last minute.
They went forward with a ten round non-title fight, and Marquez won a unanimous decision. Marquez dropped Mepranum in rounds two and seven. The judges had it 95-93, 96-92 and 97-91.
