IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18KOs) has created a whirlwind of speculation with is recent comments on social media.
The fighter shocked Wladimir Klitschko, and the boxing world, last November when he won a twelve round unanimous decision to capture the heavyweight crown.
There is a mandatory rematch in place due to a contract clause in the bout agreement. Klitschko has exercised that clause, which prevented Fury from defending his IBF title in a mandatory fight with Czar Glazkov. The IBF stripped him of the belt, which Charles Martin captured last month with a TKO in three of Glazkov.
While everyone is waiting for a date and venue for the Klitschko rematch, Fury has created some doubts about the rematch taking place, at least in the immediate future.
Fury stated that he flew to London for an 'urgent meeting' to finalize a 'massive' fight against someone who was left up to speculation - and the comments appear to point to an opponent who is not Wladimir Klitschko.
"Some massive news coming soon, had to come to London for an urgent meeting about a massive fight,TBA very soon, u will not believe who!!!!!!," Fury wrote on social media.
If the next opponent is NOT Klitschko, there are several options for a 'massive' fight, but several of them are already booked for other dates.
WBC champion Deontay Wilder will defend his title next against mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin. The World Boxing Council will not allow another interim-bout and Povetkin's side will not step aside.
At every turn Fury has rejected the idea of facing countryman David Haye - unless Fury finally changed his mind. Haye, who returned last month after more than three years out, is already set to fight again in late May. Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua is going to fight in April and won't be facing Fury next. There is IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin, who is currently trying to secure a fight with Joshua and their two sides are in talks.
The rematch with Klitschko was originally being eyed for May 7th. That date fell out after Amir Khan finalized his HBO Pay-Per-View headliner for the same day, against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for the WBC middleweight world title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Unless Klitschko signed off, Fury is unable to take any interim fights.
