Austin Trout has always wanted a chance to avenge his losses to Canelo Alvarez, Erislandy Lara and Jermall Charlo.
The former WBA super welterweight champion cannot understand why Miguel Cotto never seemed to feel the same way about his lopsided loss to Trout. Nearly five years have passed since Trout made a name for himself by thoroughly out-boxing Cotto in their 12-round, 154-pound title fight at Madison Square Garden, and a rematch still hasn’t been brought up to Trout.
“I was a bit surprised that it’s never been brought up,” Trout told BoxingScene.com. “He did get his revenge against [Antonio] Margarito. There were talks about him and [Manny] Pacquiao going back at it, but Pacquiao wanted him at [147] and he wanted it at [154]. And I know he wanted to throw his hat in for a rematch with Floyd [Mayweather]. But there’s never been any talks whatsoever about a rematch with me. And I don’t know why – maybe he don’t want that problem.”
The left-handed Trout beat Cotto by big margins on all three scorecards in their December 2012 bout (119-109, 117-111, 117-111).
The southpaw’s style troubled the shorter, slower Cotto, who went 3-1 and had lost only to Mayweather in junior middleweight matches before he fought Trout. The 32-year-old Trout thinks that’s why Cotto hasn’t expressed any interest in a rematch.
“I think so, I honestly do,” Trout said. “I think he just knows he won’t mesh well with me.”
The 36-year-old Cotto (41-5, 33 KOs), the WBO super welterweight champion, is expected to fight welterweight contender Sadam Ali (25-1, 14 KOs) in what is supposed to be the last fight of the Puerto Rican icon’s career, December 2 at Madison Square Garden.
Meanwhile, Trout (30-3, 17 KOs) is preparing to try to become a two-time 154-pound champion. The Las Cruces, New Mexico, native will challenge IBF junior middleweight champion Jarrett Hurd (20-0, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (Showtime; 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).
