Tony Thompson: record, next fight and profile →
There's a certain amount of satisfaction that comes with being the one fighter in your division whom few others wish to face. The cost, however, comes in not remaining as active as you wish, as you can't have a fight without an opponent manning the opposite corner.
After weeks of attacking Luis Ortiz on BoxingScene.com, veteran Tony Thompson will get his opportunity to face the Cuban fighter on March 5th in Washington. The WBA has yet to sanction this fight for Ortiz's WBA interim-heavyweight title.
Golden Boy Promotions had entertained the notion of a non-title for Luis Ortiz if that's what it took to keep the unbeaten heavyweight active. That theory will now be put to the test.
LOS ANGELES - Fresh from a stunning knockout of Bryant 'By-By' Jennings and eager to continue his quest to be the best heavyweight in the sport, WBA Interim Heavyweight World Champion Luis 'The Real King Kong' Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) will make his first title defense of 2016 when he faces former world title challenger Tony 'The Tiger' Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in 12-round main event at the DC Armory, in Washington D.C.on Saturday, March 5 and televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark®beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
A furious Tony Thompson caught up with BoxingScene.com and chuckled at the notion that finding an opponent for Luis Ortiz is "Mission Impossible." BoxingScene reported on Friday that Ortiz's upcoming defense of the WBA interim-heavyweight title hit a snag, when a tentative deal with planned opponent Alexander Dimitrenko fell apart. Ortiz is scheduled to return on March 5th on HBO.
Heavyweight veteran Tony Thompson (40-6, 27KOs) is hungry to get a fight with WBA interim-champion Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21KOs). He was shocked to hear that Ortiz is going to fight Eastern Euro veteran Alexander Dimitrenko (38-2, 24KOs) on March 5th. Dimitrenko has won six in a row since getting knocked out by Kubrat Pulev in 2012, but most of those wins (if not all) came against low tier opposition.

Scott controlled most of the action thoughout the 10-round battle using his superior movement to control the pace of the fight. As he has throughout his career, Thompson refused to give in and scored a big knockdown with a thundering right hand in round nine. The fight would end up going the distance, with all three judges giving the bout to Scott by scores of 98-91, 96-93 and 95-94.

Orlando, FL--The rule of thumb with lumbering heavyweights is that a fight can play out as it appears on paper, or the night can change course with a single big punch. Both were on display - though perhaps too much of the former for the fans' liking - as Malik Scott survived a late knockdown to outpoint Tony Thompson over 10 rounds Friday evening at The Venue on University of Central Florida campus in Orlando, Florida.
