Widespread rumors began to circulate that unbeaten bantamweight Tomoki "Little Mexican" Kameda had emerged as the leading candidate to face Abner Mares, this Saturday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Kameda was being pursued to replace the injured IBF champion Joseph Agbeko, who withdrew on Wednesday.

"I just learned about this opportunity but I can't do it right now because I've committed myself [to fight] on May 7 in Japan. I would take the fight, but as I said, I can't for the moment," Kameda said.

Tomoki Kameda is scheduled to face Filipino Nathan Bolcio in Osaka. It would have been a very tough move for Kameda to head from his camp in Manila, considering the extreme length of the flight and the huge time difference, to arrive with a clear head for a Saturday fight in California.
