Mexico, Cancun Quintana Roo - In a battle of former world champion Cristian "Diamante" Mijares (56-8-2, 26 KO's) won a unanimous decision victory over Tomas "Gusano" Rojas (48-15-1, 32 KO's) in Veracruz in the main event of a Televisa card from the crowded "Oasis Arena Cancun". Judge Euberto Diaz scored is 96-93, Oscar Calderón scored 96-94 and Eliseo Gonzalez Jr. scored 95-94.
It was Cristian Mijares himself who made the declaration that he'll once again fight another former world champion, Tomas "Gusano" Rojas.... and almost certainly in Veracruz.
It was never going to be a fight that would directly lead to a title fight, but that didn't stop Marco Antonio Periban from treating his latest ring appearance as a live audition. The 31-year old super middleweight from Mexico racked up his third straight win, knocking out Ghana's Joshua Okine in three rounds Saturday evening in Veracruz, Mexico.
Zanfer Promotions was forced to cancel Saturday's card in Tijuana, after the opponent for former world champion Tomas "Gusano" Rojas withdrew with an injury. Dominican boxer Manuel Gonzalez withdrew from the contest and Zanfer found it impossible to find a suitable replacement on three days notice, so they canceled the card. Guillermo Brito, Chief Operating of Zanfer, apologized to fans for the suspension of this huge card which would have featured Joselyn Arroyo going for the WBA flyweight title against Maria Suarez.
The televised portion of the card in the US opened with action in the Featherweight division. Making it five in a row since a brutal seventh round knockout loss to WBC Bantamweight titlist Shinsuke Yamanaka, 34-year old former WBC Super Flyweight beltholder Tomas Rojas (44-14-1, 29 KO), 127, of Veracruz, Mexico, picked up ten rounds of work in a dominant unanimous decision victory over 28-year old Irving Berry (22-6-2, 9 KO), 127, of Panama City, Panama.
Francisco Rodriguez Jr. and Katsunari Takayama both came in right at the 105 lb. strawweight limit for their two-belt unification bout Saturday evening in Monterrey, Mexico. The bout will air live on TV Azteca in Mexico and beIN Español in the United States.
Tomas 'Gusano' Rojas picked up his 4th straight win with a stoppage of Jose Cabrera. The bout generally flowed in one direction, as Rojas' two-fisted attack was just too much for Cabrera's leaky defense. The fight ended with Rojas unloading and Cabrera beaten to the point where the referee felt the boxer could no longer defend himself.
Promoter/Manager Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde claims that his fighter Vergel Nebran (11-7-1, 7 KO’s) was knocked out by a low blow in the eight of a ten round bout against former WBC super flyweight champion Tomas “Gusano” Rojas (42-14-1, 28 knockouts) in Vera Cruz, Mexico on Saturday night. Elorde showed BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard a video of the fight and he did seem to have a case as the uppercut by Rojas appeared to catch Nebran below the belt and the fighter went down clutching his lower parts in pain while the referee, instead of giving Nebran time to recover - counted him out.
All it took was one round for Moises Fuentes to capture the WBO's interim junior flyweight world title, as he battered the brave Colombian Luis de la Rosa before eight thousand people at the Palenque de la Feria in Tapachula , Chiapas. The Zanfer promoted card aired on Azteca 7. Fuentes became the second Mexican in boxing history to win titles at 105 and 108. Fuentes came out swinging in the first round, hurt De la Rosa with a few early shot and then unleashed a heavy barrage against the ropes to force the referee's intervention. Fuentes improved his record to 18 wins with 9 knockouts, one loss and one draw, while Luis de la Rosa scored his third setback in exchange for 22 wins, with 12 before the limit and a draw.
